โ† Clocktower

How to play

Blood on the Clocktower is a social deduction game for 5 to 15 players and one Storyteller. Everyone gets a secret character with a special ability. Good players try to find and execute the Demon. Evil players lie, kill and survive.

Two teams, one Demon

Good

Townsfolk have helpful abilities. Outsiders are good, but their abilities get in the way.

Good wins when the Demon dies.

Evil

Minions help the Demon and cause trouble. The Demon kills a player every night.

Evil wins when only two players are left alive.

Evil knows who is on their team (in games of 7+). Good does not. You can say anything you like, including lies, but you may never show anyone your character token or your phoneโ€™s card.

How a game flows

  1. ๐ŸŒ™

    The first night

Everyone closes their eyes. The Storyteller wakes characters one at a time to give them information or let them act. Evil players meet each other. No one dies on the first night.

  2. โ˜€๏ธ

    The day

Everyone wakes. The Storyteller announces who died overnight (never how). Players talk in groups, in private, and all together. Claim a character, or claim someone elseโ€™s. Share information, or donโ€™t.

  3. โ˜๏ธ

    Nominations

When the Storyteller calls for nominations, any living player may nominate one player per day, and each player may be nominated once per day. Every nomination goes to a vote.

  4. โš–๏ธ

    Execution

At the end of the day, the player with the most votes (if it reaches half the living, rounded up) is executed and dies. A tie means no one is executed.

  5. ๐Ÿ”

    Night again

The Demon now kills each night, and more characters wake. Repeat until the Demon dies or only two players remain.

The voting maths

8
โœ‹โœ‹โœ‹โœ‹โœ‹โœ‹โœ‹โœ‹

With 8 alive, a nominee needs 4 votes to go on the block.

  • The Storytellerโ€™s hand sweeps clockwise from the nominee. Your hand must be up when it reaches you.
  • To go on the block, a nominee needs at least half the living playersโ€™ votes, rounded up.
  • A later nominee must beat the current count to replace them. Tie it and nobody is on the block.
  • You can vote as many times as you like each day, for as many nominees as you like.

Death is not the end

Dead players keep talking and stay in the game. Their team can still win. They lose their ability, cannot nominate, and get exactly one ghost vote for the rest of the game. Use it wisely: the final day is often decided by the dead.

Drunk, poisoned and misregistering

Drunk

You have no ability, but you donโ€™t know it. Any info you get may be false.

Poisoned

Exactly like drunk, but caused by an evil ability.

Registering

Some characters (Recluse, Spy) can show up as a different team or character to other abilities.

For the Storyteller

  • Your job is a close game, not a fair refereeโ€™s. Help whichever team is losing with the choices the rules give you.
  • Wake players quietly. Tap a shoulder, show tokens, and use hand signals. This app shows you who to wake, in order, and what the true answer would be.
  • Drunk and poisoned players get believable wrong info, not nonsense.
  • Announce deaths, not causes. โ€œThis morning, Presley is dead.โ€
  • When unsure, rule quickly and keep the game moving. Fun beats precision.
